FINDING A NEW HOME

FINDING A NEW HOME

Rachel is walking down the street when she bumps into her neighbour Martin…

R: Oh, hi Martin!

M: Hello, Rachel. I haven't seen you for a long time!

R: I know! We've been so busy lately. Remember I told you that with our baby, Adam, our house was getting too small for us?

M: Yes, I remember. That was about six weeks ago.

R: Well since then we've been looking everywhere for a new place to live.

M: I'm sorry to hear you're moving away.

R: Don't speak so soon. It's not so easy to find the right place.

M: What do you mean?

R: Well, there are lots of different things to consider. Jason and I have been looking at different houses every evening for weeks. We still haven't seen one which suited us.

M: What kind of place are you looking for?

R: We need a two-bedroomed house with a living room, a dining room, and a study. I need a place where I can work from home and Jason needs somewhere to store his miniature car collection!

M: Yes of course. But surely it can't be that hard to find something suitable?

R: No, we've seen several houses that are large enough, but there are other things to consider…

M: Such as?

R: As we only have one car, it must be near enough for me to walk to work, and not too far from the shops to be able to go on foot. Then there must be a good school in the neighbourhood for when Adam is older. And we want to be close enough to the city centre to be able to go out in the evening from time to time.

M: Hmmm, I'm starting to see why you've been having problems finding your ideal home.

R: But I haven't finished yet. There must be a small garden and the rent must be within our budget.

M: Ok, I see. And how many houses have you seen which met all these requirements?

R: Well, we did see some, believe it or not. But we hadn't taken the landlords into account.

M: The landlords? What do you mean?

R: You'd be surprised how demanding they can be. Some of them don't allow young families. And with others you have to pay six month's rent in advance.

M: Crikey! I know what you mean, though. It’s not easy to find a good landlord. You should have a look at my contract. They don't allow you to make any changes to the house, and you must keep the place in perfect order. Maybe you should think about buying your own place?

R: We would if we could, but we really can’t afford it…

Anyway, I must go, I have to collect Adam from nursery, and we have another house to look at this evening.

M: I hope this will be the one! Good luck! Bye Rachel.

M : Oui, je me souviens.

Bon courage. Au revoir Rachel.
