Molly: It’s Birtwhistle’s of Ilkley. A subsidiary, like you! Why
do you think they’re sending us to subsidiaries, when
nearly everyone else seems to have got a place at
headquarters?
Kate: Well actually, David Robinson told me that they always
send the best junior managers to Birtwhistle’s and
Norfolk Chocolate. He said they get a much more
interesting experience there, very varied, very hands-on,
and you have to be good to be chosen!
M: You sure he wasn’t joking?
K: No, seriously, I don’t think he was.
M: What are you looking at?
K: The organisation chart… Just trying to remember some of
the names!
M: Who’s in charge at Ilkley then?
K: Well, the plant manager’s name is John Crowther. He
reports to United Chocolate’s Production Director, Albert
Batty. He’s the one who gave us a talk last week and took
us round the factory in Filton.
M: There’s no Birtwhistle, then, in charge at Birtwhistle’s?
K: There was a Freddie Birtwhistle, who still owns a good
percentage of the shares. He’s a director of United
Chocolate, of course.
M: Freddie Birtwhistle, it doesn’t sound quite as posh as
Lord Werrett!
K: Lord Werrett of Thornbury, to use his full title… He’s only a
life peer, you know, but he is a descendant of the family
who started the company in the 18th century. They were
Quakers, actually. But he’s done loads for the community
in Bristol, and Thornbury, of course…
M: Really, Kate, I don’t know where you get all this stuff from. (looking at the organisation chart) Hey, can you remind me
why these two people, Alexander Spencer-Jones and
June Isobel, are presented differently in the organisation
chart, if you see what I mean?
K: It’s because the positions they occupy are functional, or
staff, as opposed to operational, or line. That means…
M: (changing the subject) Where is Ilkley, by the way, Kate?
K: In Yorkshire, not too far from Leeds.
M: And is there anything to do there?
K: Perhaps not in Ilkley, but Leeds is a great place!
M: You know Leeds? You’re amazing, Kate, you know
everything!
K: Ohhh, I had a boyfriend from Leeds when I was at
university…
M: And do you have a boyfriend now?
K: Nothing regular, if you know what I mean…
M: Oh yes, I know what you mean!
K: Norwich is not that far from Leeds, really. Maybe we could
get together sometimes at weekends. Have a little fun!
What do you say?
M: Great! You have my mobile number, don’t you? Let me
give you the number of the hotel I’ll be staying in at the
beginning.
K: I’ll give you mine, too… (they look for the numbers) By the
way, do you know where Harry will be doing his training?
M: No I don’t. But they say he’ll be off work for a few weeks.
Apparently there’s nothing broken, but all the same…

Pourquoi ils nous envoient dans des filiales, à ton avis,
alors que presque tous les autres semblent avoir une place
au siège ?
Kate : En fait, David Robinson m’a dit qu’ils envoient toujours
les meilleurs cadres juniors chez Birtwhistle’s ou Norfolk
Chocolate. Il a dit que l’expérience y est beaucoup plus
intéressante, très variée, très pratique, et qu’il faut être bon
pour être choisi !
M : Tu es sûre qu’il ne plaisantait pas ?
K : Non, sérieusement, je ne pense pas.
M : Qu’est-ce que tu regardes ?
K : L’organigramme. J’essaie simplement de me souvenir de
quelques-uns des noms !
M : Alors qui est le responsable à Ilkley ?
K : Eh bien le directeur d’usine s’appelle John Crowther. Il
dépend du Directeur de la production de United
Chocolate, Albert Batty. C’est lui qui nous a parlé la
semaine dernière et nous a fait visiter l’usine à Filton.
M : Il n’y a pas de Birtwhistle, alors, qui s’occupe de Birtwhistle
?
K : Il y avait un Freddie Birtwhistle, qui détient toujours un bon
pourcentage des actions. C’est un des administrateurs de
United Chocolate, bien sûr.
M : Freddie Birtwhistle… Ça ne sonne pas tout à fait aussi
bien que Lord Werrett!
K : Lord Werrett de Thornbury, pour utiliser son titre
complet… Ce n’est qu’un pair à vie, tu sais, mais il
descend de la famille qui a créé l’entreprise au XVIIIe
siècle. C’étaient des Quakers, en fait. Mais il a fait plein de
choses pour la communauté à Bristol, et à Thornbury, bien
sûr…
M : Vraiment, Kate, je ne sais pas où tu trouves tous ces trucs. (Elle regarde l’organigramme.) Dis donc, est-ce que tu peux
me rappeler pourquoi ces deux personnes, Alexander
Spencer-Jones et June Isobel, sont placées différemment
dans l’organigramme, si tu vois ce que je veux dire ?
K : C’est parce que les positions qu’elles occupent sont
fonctionnelles, ou « staff », et non pas opérationnelles, ou
« line ». Ça veut dire…
M : (Changeant de sujet) Au fait, Kate, Ilkley se trouve où ?
K : Dans le Yorkshire, pas trop loin de Leeds.
