STARTING WORK
Molly: Your name’s Kate, isn’t it?
Kate: Yes, that’s right. I studied management at Waringham
University, but I’m from Cambridge.
M: I’m Molly. I only did modern languages in Ireland!
K: Mmm, I thought I recognised that accent! But why do you
say “only” modern languages?
M: Everybody else seems to have studied business
administration, management, marketing… Apart from
Arvind, who did computer science.
K: Yes, but you heard Mr Spencer-Jones this morning. He said
that we should forget what we’d studied before. That
we’d been selected because of our perceived potential,
and that UC was capable of training us. So perhaps you
have more perceived potential than the rest of us!
M: “Perceived” is the word, Kate! I was surprised that Mr
Spencer-Jones welcomed us personally and spent so
much time with us. He must be a very busy man!
Harry: Why should you be surprised? That’s his job after all!
That’s what he gets paid for, and very handsomely too, I
should imagine.
M: OK, but he must have so much to do!
K: He’s going to be with us this afternoon, as well, to talk
about how the company is organised, in the UK, in the
USA, throughout the world in fact.
M: I’m looking forward to that! I must admit I don’t really
understand the difference between all the types of
company that exist! You know what I mean: Plc, Ltd, Inc.,
holding companies, subsidiaries… The UC group is some
organisation!
H: You mean you didn’t study all of that on the Internet
before you came here for the interview?
M: We all did that, but I’m sure most of us have forgotten!
H: Well, actually…
K: I’m looking forward to the session with the Marketing
Director: we should find out about all the products and
brands... And then the Production Director, with the visit
to a production plant!
M: Perhaps we’ll even get to taste some chocolate!
H: The only thing that interests me this week is the session
with the Chief Financial Officer. Now that should be
interesting. Anyway, I’m going to try and find somewhere
to have a cigarette. They don’t even have a smoking zone
in their cafeteria!
M: I wonder what they’ve got planned for the weekend.
David Robinson said something about extreme sports...I
hope we’re not going bungee-jumping off the Clifton
Suspension Bridge!
K: Oh, it’s all about bonding and team-building, no doubt.
M: Well, I’m sure nobody’s going to do too much of that with
Harry!

Kate : Oui, c’est ça. J’ai étudié le management à l’Université
de Waringham mais je suis de Cambridge.
M : Moi, c’est Molly. Je n’ai fait que les langues vivantes en
Irlande !
K : Mmm, il m’avait bien semblé reconnaître cet accent ! Mais
pourquoi tu dis « que » les langues vivantes ?
M : J’ai l’impression que tous les autres ont étudié la gestion
des entreprises, le management, le marketing…À part
Arvind, qui a fait de l’informatique.
K : Oui, mais tu as entendu M. Spencer-Jones, ce matin. Il a dit
que nous devions oublier ce que nous avions étudié avant.
Que nous avions été sélectionnés pour notre potentiel
perçu, et que UC était capable de nous former. C’est peut-
être que tu as plus de potentiel que nous.
M : « Perçu », c’est le mot, Kate ! J’ai été surprise que M.
Spencer-Jones nous ait accueillis personnellement, et qu’il
ait passé autant de temps avec nous. Ça doit être un
homme très occupé !
Harry : Pourquoi serais-tu surprise ? C’est son boulot, après
tout ! C’est pour ça qu’on le paie, et très généreusement,
j’imagine.
M : OK, mais il doit avoir tellement de choses à faire !
K : Il va être avec nous aussi cet après-midi, pour expliquer
comment la société est organisée, au Royaume-Uni, aux
États-Unis, partout dans le monde, en fait.
M : J’attends ça avec beaucoup d’intérêt. Je dois avouer que
je ne comprends pas vraiment la différence entre toutes les
sortes de sociétés qui existent. Tu vois ce que je veux dire :
Plc, Ltd, Inc., les holdings, les filiales…Le groupe UC est une
sacrée organisation !
H : Tu veux dire que tu n’as pas regardé tout ça sur Internet
avant de venir ici pour l’entretien ?
M : Nous avons tous fait ça, mais je suis persuadée que la
plupart d’entre nous ont oublié.
H : Eh bien en fait…
K : Moi, j’attends avec impatience la séance avec le directeur
du marketing : nous devrions découvrir tous les produits et
toutes les marques… Et puis le directeur de production,
avec la visite d’une usine !
M : Peut-être que nous aurons même l’occasion de goûter du
chocolat !
H : Personnellement, tout ce qui m’intéresse cette semaine,
c’est la séance avec le directeur financier. Ça devrait être
intéressant, ça. En tout cas, je vais essayer de trouver un
endroit pour fumer une cigarette. Ils n’ont même pas de
zone fumeurs dans leur cafétéria !
M : Je me demande ce qu’ils ont prévu pour le week-end.
David Robinson a parlé de sports extrêmes… J’espère
qu’on ne va pas nous faire sauter à l’élastique du pont
suspendu de Clifton !
K : Oh, c’est pour créer des liens, former une équipe, sans
doute.
M : Eh bien je suis sûre que personne ne va en créer beaucoup
avec Harry !
