DIARY OF A BRITISH HOLIDAY (Part 2)
Friday 9th August
We have come up to the north of England and are now in Chester. Chester was a Roman centre and fort and the Roman walls around the city are still intact. Today we walked around the walls and visited the Grosvenor Museum to see the excavated Roman bath house and the partly-excavated Roman amphitheatre. The city centre has many beautiful half-timbered mediaeval houses. Our hotel dates from the 15th century!
Monday 12th August
We arrived in the Lake District yesterday morning. We are lucky to have beautiful weather and from the window of our room we have a fantastic view of Lake Windermere. The countryside is a magnificent combination of lakes and hills. Today we went for a long walk from Ambleside to Grasmere and back, passing the Rydal Falls on the way.
Wednesday 14th August
We are in Scotland! We left the lakes late last night and this morning arrived in the Highlands. We're staying in Oban on the west coast. Here the climate is mild, due to the Gulf Stream in the sea. There is even a semi-tropical garden, full of exotic plants and trees. Tomorrow we're going to take a boat to visit the island of Skye with its beautiful mountains and sea lochs, but for now we’re off to a pub to try a local speciality: haggis!
Friday 16th August
We spent the day at Loch Lomond, walking and visiting a whisky distillery. We also visited Cameron House which has the world's largest collection of whisky bottles. We bought some excellent malt whisky and some tartan cloth to take home: there are more than three hundred (300) different tartans!
Sunday 18th August
We were sorry to leave Scotland and wished we had had more time to spend there, but there are plenty more places we still want to visit. We have come down to York to see the Minster and the Shambles, the ancient narrow streets and alleys full of history. We had a pub lunch down by the river and sat in the sun watching the ducks and the swans. Bill wants to visit the railway museum… maybe we’ll have time tomorrow morning.
Monday 19th August
We arrived in Cambridge this evening. After supper we walked along the river to see the beautiful riverside colleges. It’s very quiet as the students are all on holiday! Tomorrow we'll take a rowing boat along the river and go to the Botanical Gardens and the Cambridge and County Folk Museum.
Wednesday 21st August.
We have arrived at the house of our old friends the Browns in Ely just outside Cambridge. We are spending a couple of days here before going on to London and then the south coast. I hope we will have the chance to go to Oxford as well, but we can't do everything. In fact, I think you could live in Britain all your life and still not have time to discover all the beautiful and interesting things there are to see.
